Mission

Mobile application engineering is a complex endeavour with more intricate challenges especially due to technical constraints and the necessities for short time to market. The development of mobile applications and services cannot be successfully accomplished by applying conventional software or Web engineering methods and tools. These do not adequately address the specific characteristics of this new breed of applications.

The MobilityLab is a Center of Excellence on Engineering of Location-based Services. It is a joint initiative between industry and research and constitutes a laboratory that strives for improving the engineering process by conducting research and development on technical as well as methodological issues. It combines concrete industrial needs with scientific results. Ultimately, this will lead to cost-effective and user-friendly mobile and ubiquitous applications.

Together with the Mobilizy start-up, the MobilityLab presented several Location-based Services at the 2009 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The MobilityLab is a Sun Center of Excellence involving Sun Microsystems, the Mobile and Web-based Information Systems Group of Salzburg Research, and the Research Group Cartography of the Vienna University of Technology.
